Ethiopia has had a busy week following the weekend stampede that according to official records killed some 55 people. The Irreecha festival in the Oromia region turned rowdy and led to the deaths. Opposition activists say the number of people who died were more than was reported by the government. They blame security forces of firing tear gas into peaceful celebrants leading to the stampede. The stampede was sparked by Ethiopia’s special forces who fired teargas and warning shots to disperse protesters at the annual Irreecha thanksgiving festival in the town of Bishoftu. The government blamed “anti-peace forces” for the stampede which they say has claimed 52 lives. The United States also confirmed that a citizen of the US had also died.
